The present Department of Immigration and Passports was started in 1982 with the zonal office, Dhaka and Regional Passport Offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna as a directorate to assist the citizens of Bangladesh in traveling abroad. The Department of Immigration and Passports was fully established in 1973 in post-independence independent sovereign Bangladesh. The number of offices in Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet, Rajshahi and Khulna is 6 (six) including the head office of the department located in Dhaka. In 2010 a revolutionary change took place in the Department of Immigration and Passports. The issuance of Machine Readable Passport (MRP) and Machine Readable Visa (MRV) started in compliance with the guidelines of the International Civil Aviation Authority (ICAO). At the same time, if 19 regional passport offices are established, the number of offices is 34 (thirty four). Besides, 6 visa cells and 9 immigration checkposts were created. In 2011, another 33 (thirty three) regional passport offices were created. At present, the work of setting up passport offices in every district of the country has been completed. Besides, MRP and MRV projects have been implemented in 65 Bangladeshi missions around the world. At present the manpower of Immigration and Passport Department is 1174 people. As on February 3, 2018, 1,96,59,629 Machine Readable Passports (MRPs) and 8,34,798 Machine Readable Visas (MRVs) have been successfully printed.
